Battle Royale is a Japanese movie based on a 1999 novel of the same name written by Koushun Takami. The movie was released in 2000 and is famed director Kinji Fukasau’s last film. The story revolves around a dystopian society where a group of high school students are forced to kill one another until only one is left alive. The plot has similarities to the novel "The Hunger Games" (published 9 years after Battle Royale in 2008), which was also adapted into a motion picture.
Battle Royale was a domestic blockbuster in Japan and quickly gained international acclaim. The film is full of mayhem, bullets and blood and features an uncanny blend of horror and humor. Critics praise the execution of the plot, the portrayal by the actors and the overall cinematic quality of the movie.
